NYC Mayor Zohran Mamdani laid emphasis on the importance of the city’s hard-working taxi and for-hire vehicles (FHV) drivers saying, ‘they would no longer be on their own.’

“I just want you to know that no longer will you be on your own because no matter where you are in this city, you know that there are those of us in City Hall we are thinking of you, even though we don’t know your name,” Mamdani told an Iftar get-together in the city.

Attending the Iftar hosted by New York Taxi Workers Alliance (NYTWA) in its Long Island Office, the Mayor recalled the 2021 taxi medallion hunger strike, where participants did not know when the fast would end, which drew a direct connection between the meaning of Ramadan and the movement.

NYTWA Executive Director Bhairavi Desai, TLC chair nominee Midori Valdivia, Deputy Mayor for Economic Justice Julie Su, and a host of drivers, among others, attended the event.

Mamdani described NYTWA as ‘home’ and reinforced a relationship built not in the office but through years of organizing alongside drivers.

  1. Uber is giving us very hard time by asking take the selfie just to prove if that’s our account

    1. Good night Rajesh,

We understand your concern. Identity verification measures like selfie checks are put in place by companies like Uber to help ensure safety for both riders and drivers, and to prevent account misuse. While it may feel inconvenient at times, these steps are meant to protect everyone on the platform.
