The New York City Council will vote to override the veto and implement ‘intro 276’ tomorrow (Thursday) to end the abuse of “unfair” Uber/Lyft account deactivations.

New York Taxi Workers Alliance (NYTWA), a 28,000-member-strong union of the city’s taxicab drivers and FHV drivers, will rally to support the bill at 12 noon tomorrow at City Hall.

“NYTWA would observe and stay until the victory comes…we are optimistic about passing the bill, which will put an end to the unfair account deactivation issue for the thousands of drivers,” Mohammed Tipu Sultan, a NYTWA organizer and drivers’ advocate, told the news portal correspondent Kamal Ahmed.

Mr. Sultan said it will take 180 days to start the reactivation process for Uber/Lyft accounts on a case-by-case basis. ‘The issue of unfair deactivations will not be resolved overnight; rather, it will take time, and we are working on it round the clock.”

“Drivers’ spontaneous participation is a must in this regard,” the NYTWA leader said and urged all the city’s taxi and ass-based drivers to join the rally to make it a successful one.

A lot of endeavors, particularly the formation of a commission and setting up an office space by the NYC Department of Consumer and Worker Protection (DCWP) need to be done, said the drivers’ advocate who was behind a driving force in the 2021 hunger strike and City Hall protest that led to historic debt relief for drivers.

In a social media post, the alliance earlier said, “Let’s kick off our 2026 together – with a definitive victory! City Council votes to override the veto by ex-Mayor Eric Adams. Intro 276 will then become law.”

Earlier on Thursday 18,2025, the city Council passed the deactivation protection bill ending the threat of unfair “deactivations” or firing for almost 10,000 app-based drivers in the city.

NYTWA pushed the bill through the City Council. Council Members Shekar Krisnan and Shahana Hanif played a key role in passing the bill.
